Case Study 3: Empowering Parents of a Young Boy with Challenging Behavior
I worked with the family of a 6-year-old boy who exhibited difficult-to-manage distressed behaviours, hitting his parents and siblings in addition to significant sleep issues. Together, we explored the reasons their son exhibited behaviour that challenged them, we established triggers, including his sensory needs and I helped them make the necessary adaptations to their parenting approach to accommodate his unique needs.
We introduced structure, routine, and predictability, and empowered the parents by helping them understand their son's neurodiversity and thinking patterns. Although this took some time this understanding gave them the confidence to establish clear expectations and goals.
With guidance, the family was able to adapt their strategies effectively, leading to a more structured, predictable environment that benefited both the child and the parents.
Outcome:
The family reported that they were able to "get back to being parents" rather than constantly chasing after their son without a clear direction. They finally had a full night's sleep. They gained confidence in their ability to support their son, and the child experienced greater stability and understanding.
