Case Study 1: Supporting Steve with Complex Needs

Steve, a 25-year-old man with a genetic disorder, ADHD, Autism, physical disabilities, and learning difficulties, had not attended any day placements for three years. His previous placement was unable to meet his specific needs, leaving him without appropriate support.

When a suitable placement was identified, it was crucial for his success, as the risk of distressed and violent outbursts at home were high if his needs were not properly managed. This behavior was often triggered by his sensory processing issues, anxiety, and a need for structure. Any deviation from routine heightened his anxiety, increasing the likelihood of aggressive behavior.

The family sought my professional assistance to address these challenges.
I created a comprehensive Communication Passport using input from Steve, his family, and professional assessments. This document outlined the complexities of his physical, psychological, and executive functioning needs. In parallel, I developed a safe strategy for managing his distress, focusing on his sensory and anxiety-related challenges.

A structured schedule was introduced, carefully reviewed and adapted on a weekly basis. This schedule was intentionally paced to allow Steve to gradually transition into attending the day placement three days a week. Regular meetings with staff ensured that they understood Steve's thinking patterns and were able to interpret his behavior effectively.

Outcome:

Steve is now permanently attending the day activity placement, and the family reported significant improvements in his life and theirs, thanks to the success of the placement.
