Understanding Triggers and Preventing Sensory Overload

January 10, 2018by lifecoach_jaw86s

Autonomic storms can be triggered by a variety of factors, including sensory overload, environmental changes, or emotional stressors. Unfortunately, due to a lack of understanding about sensory processing and neurodiversity, individuals experiencing an autonomic storm are often misunderstood. They may be labelled as “misbehaving,” “angry,” or “defiant,” and may even be punished for behaviours that are beyond their control.

During these episodes, the individual may become unresponsive or unable to follow instructions, as their brain is overwhelmed and is attempting to protect them from further distress. In some cases, they may enter a shutdown state where they cannot speak or engage at all.
